Remember

I love carved wooden angels. I have several around my house and not just at Christmas time. Some are large--several feet high with trumpets. Others are small relief plaques that are on my wall.

One of my pastors suggested that these angels look nothing like the kind in the Bible. Mine are a bit wimpy--not strong warrior messengers. The ones around my home are more on the cute side.

There is a theme throughout scripture. God often asks His people to remember what He has done. Remember who He is. Just the word remember occurs over 160 times in scriptures.

Usually after significant events in the Old Testament, God commanded His people to set up standing stones. These were large rocks set up so generations to come would see and remember His deeds.

So many of the Old Testament feasts were designed to commemorate God's acts and His future plan for drawing His creation into eternal fellowship with Him. The priests' clothing and each detail of the tabernacle were specifically designed by God. Over and over the theme is to commemorate God.

Jesus shared the last supper with His disciples and throughout He encouraged us to do likewise in remembrance of Him. Of course, communion is celebrated in our churches to remember what Christ did on the cross to buy our salvation.

I was particularly excited, recently, to read God's commands in Leviticus. He asked skillful weavers to weave beautiful designs with rich threads into the curtains surrounding the Tabernacle in the wilderness.

And guess what! God told them to weave pictures of angels into the design. So, when I'm praying for my family, I love to catch a glimpse of one my angels. I am reminded of His messengers unseen who are present to carry out His plans. I'll have a lot of questions when I get to heaven about just how exactly angels play a part in our lives. For now, I am satisfied to see them and remember God's incredible power--ever present in our lives.

  1. Angels are really popular now. I'm glad. We have a lot of little angel figurines around our house. I think your pastor is right. I doubt if the real angels look like the ones we have to represent them. That's one of the things I'm looking forward to in heaven, is seeing the angels.
Thank you for sharing with us on Spiritual Sundays.

  2. I have some angels in my home all year, too. . .that can be taken in different ways. We have a doll like angel that sometimes sits on a small stool and is currently still hanging high between our kitchen and living room.

  5. I like angels too and I look forward to seeing what they really do look like someday. I have several 'cute' ones in my home also and I know that the heavenly ones don't look anything like them. But that's ok. Thank you for your post and I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.

    Blessings,

  10. I like to think of having protection from the Lord when He sends His angels through people we know or through strangers to help us out at times of need. They are like "faith markers" in my life's journey and always reminds me of His everlasting kindness and unconditional love. What a great reminder you have whenever you look at one of your angels. God bless.

  11. I think of where I've been and can't help believe He had angels protecting me...even some in human form who reached out in ways that made a difference. Loved this post.

  12. I love Angels in decorating , too. And I study the Bible & I know the two are very different.
But, I feel the same as you . They turn your heart & mind towards God . They are what artists have envisioned & are symbols of the real thing.
The Bible says eye has not seen nor ear heard what Heaven has in store , while here on earth we can only imagine !

  13. I love angels! I know for a fact God sent angels to protect me when I had backslidden for a season many years ago. I may have turned away from God, but He never turned away from me because He knew I'd be back.

Thank you for sharing this. I imagine your angel collection is simply breathtaking. God bless you today and every day!

  18. I love your post and the text you shared about words written about angels. Angels are a true love of mine too. It doesn't matter what our vision of angels is. They are out there and a part of our loves. Many are in human form. I'm talking about the beautiful loving people dedicated to helping others. The kind of people we have all met from time to time.
    Blessings to you, Jeanne

  20. Was just reading today about some life size angel statues in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Their faces showed the sorrow and pain that was endured for our sake, and each carried symbols from Christ's passion like the whip, spikes, the golden chalice, the crown of thorns, the cloth of Veronica, etc. They are nameless and have appeared to help Mary with her grief. They are not unique to the town. Statues and paintings of these angels exist throughout Europe. The artisans evoke emotion from viewers to make them more than just observers, but actually participants in the compassion of the story of Christ's death and resurection.
